That WHY question!

Folks sometimes ask why this?  Every project has a "why" question, doesn't it?  A reason, a need, a reason that starts everything, right?

Sometimes we are blessed to wrap the project up in a positive way and get a "thing" that can answer that "What did you do this for?" question.  And sometimes we have to call the day with a cup of freshly brewed coffee (or some good ice-cream) or any other type of poison and just hang it up and move on.

So, back in 2014 the irrigation setup in my home needed some serious work.  I had to change the location of one of the valves, and all of the wires between controller and all of the valves were ruined and had to be changed.   Dealing with damage wires was almost a yearly issue anyway, almost every Spring I had to fix something.  But, it was time for a complete overhaul.

I started looking for a way to connect the valves that I already had to the controller I already had, BUT without running any wires at all.  After all, it was 2014 and everything has gone wireless "allegedly" and naturally someone or some company had done it and all I had to do was to fork out some cash and get it done. It has to be on the shelf somewhere, right?

After more than 2 or 3 trips to local hardware stores and various distributors in the area and a handful of phone calls to different companies I found out there is no such thing.  I did get few laughs and some strange looks in the stores when I asked for a wireless retrofit solution.  But, I could not find what I wanted.

So, natural thing was to post the question online which of course brought out all the smart A... comments and definitely got some good laughs, it was entertaining.

Few folks told me to change everything to DC-latched valves with integrated controller (hockey pucks) and be done with it, and some told me to hire a professional and just rewire the system.  To make the story short, I got a bunch of advice and some hot air here and there, but not the solution I wanted.  It was all good, I learned a bunch.  Couple folks told me "if" there was such a thing, then they can use it themselves. 

So, I built it only because I needed it for my own home.  I was not going to rewire the system and definitely wasn't going to get any new valves.   Plus, the challenge of building the darn thing was an added bonus that had to be done.

Well, a neighbor saw it, asked for it so he can use it in his house, and then one thing led to another and here we are.

Maybe this can save someone some digging, some frustration, and some time that goes with debugging bad wires over and over and over.  But again, some love the torment of dealing with wires and sometimes it is not a big deal either, and I know that well.  Some folks even make a living out of fixing wires, so I get it.

This was my story about "why?".  And, the rest is just a history that I doubt anyone cares to know about.
